Statement from Jane E Klinger, Chair Statements

The name of our committee was officially changed in 2023 to the International Committee of Memorial and Human Rights Museums (ICMEMOHRI) in recognition that the underlying foundation of our work in the remembrance of victims of public crimes is to highlight the history of human rights violations and encourage the safeguarding of human rights within our work as museum professionals.

All over the world, democratic values are being violated, and people are being persecuted for their ideas, gender, religion, race and/or social background. Oppressing people and violating human rights are a first step towards crimes against humanity. Educating the public of the dangers of human rights violations and the tragic outcomes are a core component of the mission of both museums that memorialize the victims of crimes against humanity and those that focus on human rights.

In the past year, ICMEMOHRI has taken part in an ICOM webinar commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, organized a forum for Ukrainian museum professionals to highlight the Russian attacks on the Ukrainian people and their culture, marked the 30th anniversary of the genocide against the Tutsi by holding our conference in Kigali, Rwanda, the first conference of an International Committee on the African continent.

Our work continues within the museum field to learn, inform, and strengthen our understanding of difficult histories and their consequences to help us strive for a better future.
